This will allow the countries to share procedural knowledge and to act together during operations. Spain chose the Reaper because it is the model that has been acquired by other NATO members such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Netherlands. For the delivery of the Reaper to the Spanish Air Force, General Atomics made an agreement with the Spanish technology company Sener, a company which specializes in communications intelligence. The authorization included four Reaper drones, worth 158 million euros. At the time, he was largely positive about acquiring drones in the future: for the air force, he stipulated that it “absolutely must be thinking of unmanned aircraft” and that “they are, without a doubt, the future”. The acquisition of the Reaper drones was authorized by the Spanish parliament in 2015, two years after the Spanish Defence minister Pedro Morenés laid out plans for a new arms programme that would include drones. Due to its geographic location bordering the Mediterranean Sea and proximity to northern Africa, Spain is dealing both with EU border patrol obligations and with concerns regarding militant groups in this region. In 2017, the Spanish Ministry of Defence made public that it had obtained a first contract for the supply of the drones. The drones are unarmed, but have the capability to be armed in the future. In 2019, the Spanish Ministry of Defence took delivery of four Reaper drones for 158 million dollars from the US.
